The name of the town dates back to the time of Roman settlement, when there were two churches in the field from which "Feldkirch" is derived. The well-preserved medieval center at the foot of Schattenburg Castle, the ancestral seat of the Counts of Montfort, creates a charming ambience for urban life, which thrives on outstanding gastronomy, interesting cultural events and a bustling market. The history of the town, its important role during the Humanist period and its function as a border town through the turn of the century are brought to life in exhibitions, festivities, events, concerts and publications throughout the year.
