Vorarlberg FIS Ski Museum

in the backdrop of the vicarage

The history of skiing in Vorarlberg goes back some 130 years. It is the subject of the Vorarlberg FIS Ski Museum Damüls, housed in the Damüls vicarage.

Over the past decades, Christian Lingenhöle has built up an extensive collection of historic skis. After his retirement, he devoted himself even more intensively to this activity and thus created the basis of what is now the Vorarlberg Ski Museum in Damüls. In addition to historical skis, the focus is on various items of equipment and memorabilia, clothing, photographs, literature and documents. Some curiosities illustrate the way in which past generations experimented with skiing. A library and a ski history archive are currently being set up. Any information and objects are welcome.

The focus of the Ski Museum's permanent exhibition is on three areas. Starting with the beginnings of skiing in Scandinavia, important Vorarlberg skiing pioneers are presented. In addition to Viktor Sohm, the country's first skier, these include Georg Bilgeri, Hannes Schneider and Ernst Janner. A second focus is on ski production, which was initially in the hands of wainwrights. There used to be a large number of these in all regions of the state. The fact that Vorarlberg is a state with a great racing tradition is proven by the long list of medals won by racers at the Winter Olympics and World Ski Championships. All of these successful athletes are represented in the exhibition with objects. In addition to these three focal points, the show depot offers a comprehensive insight into the Lingenhöle Collection. Last but not least, the development of ski production, ski jumping and local skiing in Damüls are taken into account.
