Weather" is one of the most important topics of conversation in the world. Climate change and weather extremes are more topical than ever. So far, the driest place, the wettest place or the coldest village in the world has been found, but no record books have yet found the snowiest village in the world!
Mount Baker in the USA is already known as the snowiest "point" (on the map). In 2003, a new world record was set here at a ski station with 28.96 meters in one winter season. But where is the snowiest, permanently inhabited village in the world? There has been no official answer to this question so far.
After combing through various archives and numerous data, it emerged that the villages along the northern Alps have world record levels due to their exposed congested location. In 2006, the Walser village of Damüls in the Bregenzerwald was awarded the title of the snowiest village in the world thanks to an elaborate study and under the criterion of a meteorologically recognized weather station, which proved a minimum of five correctly recorded years of measurements. The average amount of fresh snowfall per winter season in the period under review was 9.30 meters.
Behind Damüls, the villages of Schröcken on the Hochtannberg and Braunwald in Switzerland follow in second and third place. Strict standards are set for the term "village", which exclude places such as individual farmsteads, ski stations, tourist resorts and others. The title is recognition and appreciation for all inhabitants in their struggle with the rigours of nature, and a special honor for Matthias Bischof. Thanks to his decades of hard work as a weather warden, there is a complete series of data on every centimetre that has fallen, which amounts to around 100 meters of fresh snow in a decade
This high level of snow reliability was confirmed in 2016 by a study conducted by MMag Günther Aigner. In collaboration with the "Zukunft Skisport" network, Günther Aigner worked on the topic of snow and snow safety in skiing and came to the same conclusions.
