The history of skiing in Vorarlberg goes back about 140 years.
The focus of the permanent exhibition of the ski museum is on three areas. Starting from the beginnings of skiing in Scandinavia, significant Vorarlberg ski pioneers are presented. A second focus is on ski production, which was initially in the hands of carpentry businesses. Vorarlberg's reputation as a region with a great racing tradition is proven by the long list of medals won by racers at the Olympic Winter Games and Ski World Championships. All these successful athletes are represented in the exhibition with various objects.
The new special exhibition "The Herrgottschnitzer of Damüls," Johann Martin Bischof (1838 -1928), will open on June 19. The parish church of Damüls, known for its location and furnishings, is one of the most impressive sacred buildings in Vorarlberg. Its frescoes are especially famous as outstanding evidence of artistic creation around 1500. Less known is that a local sculptor, Johann Martin Bischof, is represented. Exactly 100 years ago, he created a mighty crucifix located in the gable niche above the entrance. An exhibition in the backdrop of the parish courtyard of Damüls will commemorate the “Herrgottschnitzer of Damüls” starting in June 2026.
