FIS Skimuseum: 140 Jahre Vorarlberger Skigeschichte

The history of skiing in Vorarlberg dates back about 140 years.

The focus of the permanent exhibition at the ski museum is on three areas. Starting with the beginnings of skiing in Scandinavia, significant Vorarlberg ski pioneers are presented. A second focus is on ski production, which was initially in the hands of carpentry businesses. That Vorarlberg is a region with a great racing tradition is proven by the long list of medals won by racers at the Olympic Winter Games and Ski World Championships. All these successful athletes are represented in the exhibition with objects.

The new special exhibition of the "Hergottschnitzer von Damüls" Johann Martin Bischof (1838 -1928) will be opened on June 19th. The parish church of Damüls, known far and wide for its location and facilities, is among the most impressive sacred buildings in Vorarlberg. Its frescoes, especially, are famous as remarkable evidence of artistic creation around 1500. Less known is that a local sculptor is represented, Johann Martin Bischof. Exactly 100 years ago, he created a powerful crucifix, which is located in the gable niche above the entrance. An exhibition in the backdrop of the parish yard in Damüls will remember the unforgettable “Hergottschnitzer von Damüls” starting June 2026.
