Is yoga a sport, a spiritual teaching or a philosophy of life? The answer is: yoga is everything and nothing. We don't always have to label things just to feel safe. We have known this since before Corona: Nothing in life is really certain. Everything is constantly changing. There is not just black or white, good or bad, beautiful or ugly - there is an infinite amount of space in between. Yoga also means something different for everyone. It can be relaxed cross-legged meditation or sweat-inducing power yoga. Everyone needs something different to bring body, mind and soul into harmony. The trick is to get involved in yoga and simply try it out.
The word yoga comes from the Indian Sanskrit and means "unity and harmony". The physical and mental exercises are intended to help unite body, mind and soul. Ultimately, yoga is also a path to self-awareness. Through conscious breathing and movement, the mind can come to rest. The philosophy, which is over 5,000 years old, was spread from India to the USA and the rest of the world in the 20th century.
According to yoga teacher Christina Bohle from Vorarlberg, the reason why more and more people are practising yoga has to do with our fast-paced lifestyle: "Mindfulness and slowing down are a big issue today. Due to burnouts, depression and illness, our generation is much more concerned with its own psyche and body than in the past. We are rethinking the way we interact with nature, other people and ourselves."
Traditional Hindu yoga stands for a holistic approach to life and philosophy that determines our entire existence. While it used to be considered a pagan practice by Christianity, it is now scientifically proven that yoga promotes health and is one of the best ways to manage stress and relax. Tension is released, relieving stress-related back, neck and headaches or preventing them from occurring in the first place. Yoga is really good for you, but why?
The great thing about yoga is that anyone can take part. Through the interplay of different techniques such as physical exercises (asana), breathing exercises (pranayama) and meditation, yoga leads to a better quality of life, balance and energy. There are different directions and styles that we can choose or combine with each other. Classical Hatha Yoga is the basis for many other types of yoga, in which "Ha" (sun, strength) and "Tha" (moon, stillness), i.e. opposing energies, are brought into harmony.
The combination of repetitive movements and controlled breathing promotes flexibility and awareness of one's own body. "To feel again what is happening in your own body and especially in your head. We can influence so many things positively with our thoughts," emphasizes Bohle and says: "Whether someone chooses to meditate, pray or do yoga is basically the same for me. It's about spending time with yourself. Many people can no longer do that. Enduring the silence and listening without distractions. Being aware of your feelings and accepting them as they are."
Yoga is so effective for the Munich resident because it allows her to reset her "hard drive" in everyday life again and again. "If we don't take these conscious breaks for ourselves, the barrel gets fuller and fuller and eventually spills over. Yoga brings you back to the here and now and helps you to be fully focused on one thing. You walk out of a class and a new day begins," says the Vorarlberg native, who herself reached a point three years ago where she had to start all over again.
After a sabbatical with a trip around the world and her training in Bali and Miami, the Dornbirn native quit her previous managerial job in the fashion industry and followed her great passion for yoga and movement. She focused on Budokon Yoga - a combination of athletic yoga and martial arts elements - and set up her own business with the help of friends in the middle of the pandemic.
Budokon comes from the USA and was founded by Cameron and Melayne Shayne. This new style of yoga pushes people to their physical and mental limits in order to strengthen them. "In Budokon, you go in search of your inner warrior, who lets go of everything in the past and lives only in the moment. This type of yoga shows you that you are often only fighting against yourself. Because no one else is responsible for your happiness but yourself. With martial arts such as mixed martial arts, you learn to look forward even when you have setbacks, to focus and to trust in your abilities," explains Bohle.
By founding her own club, Warriors Nation, the yoga teacher has created a place in Munich that conveys this philosophy. "Nation because it's not about me, it's about uniting people. To have a community where everyone feels comfortable and you can be who you want to be. Yoga is not just for women or men who can switch from a standing position to a handstand or tuck their legs behind their ears. No one has to be able to do this to be a good yogi. It's much more important that you feel good after yoga and that it has helped you personally," says Bohle.
Similar to Bali, we also feel a special energy in the mountains. The tranquillity of nature is a good companion for arriving in the present and slowing down from everyday life.
From beginner to master - yoga can be practiced into old age thanks to the different types and teaching methods. Yoga adapts to the body just as the body adapts to yoga. Whether meditating, working out, strengthening your stamina or becoming more flexible - yoga can do everything and doesn't have to do anything. "Personally, yoga has shown me that the right things usually happen when you let go. By not clinging to everything so tightly, whether it's material things, people or circumstances. Everything can change from one day to the next and we have to deal with it. Nothing happens without a reason and you never know what it will be good for in the end," says Bohle, who is also referring to letting go of the famous ego. "For some, yoga is a religion. But you can also just take a relaxed view. Don't take yourself so seriously and focus on the fact that it gives you more energy than it takes away," says the martial artist.
After all, that's what yoga is all about. The balance between tension and relaxation. The balance between strength and flexibility. Finding a place outside, be it in nature or in the studio, and within yourself to recharge your batteries. In Budokon yoga, movement is a way of examining the mind and growing personally as a result. "I found out on my journey to becoming a yoga teacher that I want to help other people and make them feel good. If they feel good and happy after a yoga class with me, I've fulfilled my purpose in life," says Bohle, emphasizing: "Giving energy and getting it back - that's the special power of yoga!"
