The Habsburgs ruled the towns in Vorarlberg from Tirol and the Austrian Forelands (Freiburg in Breisgau) by turns. Between 1805 and 1814, the Fontanella therefore belonged in turns either to Austria or to Bavaria. Fontanella has been part of Vorarlberg since its foundation in 1861. From 1945 to 1955 the town was in Austria’s French occupied area.
